26/03/2012 De vreemde architectuur van deze basiliek is te verklaren door de verschillende bouwperiodes. In 1667 werd begonnen met de bouw van de "Chapelle Royal Saint-Louis" door Lodewijk XIV waarna ze in 1722 gewijd werd aan St. Christophe. Van dat gebouw is momenteel nog enkel het koor de absis en de gevel resterend, welke beschermd zijn als monument.
Na WO II kreeg de basiliek dan een indrukwekkende koperen koepel.
In 1957 werd het nieuwe koor verrijkt met een prachtige mozaïek van 200m² gemaakt door huis Orsoni uit Venetië, naar ontwerp van Jean Ransy, een plaatselijke kunstenaar. Het kunstwerk dat bestaat uit miljoenen stukjes gekleurd en verguld glas is uniek in België, en doet ons denken aan de Byzantijnse kunst. Het stelt de belangrijkste symbolen voor uit de Apocalyps.
