Sospel is only 20 minutes by car from the busy coastal strip but cleaner, less noisy, less humid and (in summer) refreshingly cooler at night. There is a good train station with regular services to Nice/up valley to Italy, and a good bus service to Menton. In recent years Sospel's population and facilities have grown, younger families have returned and the school is full. It has also become more cosmopolitain, a favourite with visitors and longer term residents from other parts of France and many European countries. None of this has changed its charm or the warm and individual character of its people.
But Sospel's real joy is its situation at the edge of the renowned Mercantour National Park. The mountain scenery is ever-changing and truly stunning - and accessible via the many trails. For wildlife lovers, the biodiversity is breathtaking and the opportunities for botanists, entomologists, zoologists and ornithologists are as good as any in France.
