Characterful and charming village, with lots of great shops selling wonderful French foodstuffs. Nice bars, not submerged by loud English or other non-French clientele. Beautiful church; little theatre. Great views of the surrounding mountains, though as the town's actually on the lower slopes of the Mont Blanc massif you only get the really magnificent views of Mont Blanc from up on the ski area. The ski area is the nicest we've been to - Evasion Mont Blanc covers a vast area which we didn't get close to exploring all of in one week. We visited Combloux, St Nicolas and Megeve, and liked them all - but there is enough to keep most levels of skier very happy just in the St Gervais area. Ski-ing to Megeve is good fun and easy for all levels above absolute beginner, and gets you into mega-rich land without having to pay Megeve prices. Next time we'll try Les Contamines as well, and the fascinating rack-and-pinion Train du Mont Blanc to les Houches. Thoroughly recommended.
