The beach is gravelly and very steep and definitely not safe for kids (the water is over an adults head almost as soon as you get in. I found it so steep that it was hard to get in and out of. There are many much better beaches in southern Crete.
Also, the taverna owner (in the only hotel on the beach and recommended by Lonely Planet) told me there were no rooms and then after I ate lunch there he changed his mind! But charged me more than usual (40 euros) because I was only staying one night! I had stayed in similar places close to the beach for single nights in both Elafonisi and Frangokastello for 30 Euro. And although a long drive in, the place was crowded (not isolated as said in Lonely Planet). With my limited time I wished I had gone to either Matala or Preveli.
