Bologna is an excellent location for a holiday, and there are quite a few historical and cultural sights to be seen. It is an atmospheric Italian city, located in the north of the country, and it has approximately 400.000 inhabitants. A quarter of them are students, what makes Bologna a fun and relaxing place to be on holiday.
The weather in Bologna is pleasant, with fairly high temperatures during spring and autumn (20 - 26°C). During winter the temperature drops to around 0°C and it usually snows. During summer the temperature rises to 30°C. As the students tend to go home during the summer the city can feel quite deserted and th42e atmosphere just isn’t as good. All together makes spring and autumn the best times to come on holiday to Bologna.
The city is also known as La Rossa ‘the red one’. That is because of the red bricks that have been used to build the houses and the roofs. Bologna is also the place where Europe’s oldest university stands, dating from 1088. All the sighs are within the city walls and this means that everything is located within walking distance.
The city is well known for its arcades. There are 40 km of arched galleries that span the old town. The centre is located within the medieval city walls and there are two interesting squares within these walls; the Piazza Maggiore and the Piazza del Nuttuno.
Two sights that are a real must during your holiday in Bologna: the Garisenda and the Asinelli towers. After climbing the latter you will have an amazing view of the city. The San Petonio Basillica and the San Pietro Cathederal are also well worth a visit. There are lots of museums in Bologna and we can recommend the Archaeological Museum.
Those who love to shop will also love the city as will those who enjoy fine dining. There are lots of nice restaurants near the Piazza del Nuttuno, and you are also bound to run into some of the locals. Along the Via Zamboni you’re bound to find traditional Italian meals served for the tiniest of prices. Dinner is usually served between 21.00 and midnight.
Food, drink and clubs can be found either on the Piazza Maggiore but also in the Via Zamboni. The Via Zamboni is full of students and the atmosphere in this area is incredibly relaxing, ideal if you are spending a holiday in Bologna.
