Het Thaipusamfestival is gewijd aan Lord Murugan, door sommige Indiërs ook Lord Subramaniam genoemd, de jongste zoon van de hindoegod Shiva. Zijn beeld wordt versierd en naar de tempel in de Batugrot gebracht. Het feest wordt gevierd in de tiende maand van de hindoekalender, ook in Zuid-India, maar daar mag het niet op deze extreme manier. Daarom komen veel Indiërs naar Maleisië. Daar is het volgens hen ‘echter’ en religieuzer
