I have been to Puerto Vallarta three winters in a row for over 2 weeks, staying in Zona Romantica in a small hotel. My friends stay there every winter for 2 months +. They have stayed in the Hotel Zone, Marina area, all over. However they have all settled on apartments/condos in Old Vallarta. That is the place to be! I love the shops and the great variety of small restaurants of any description. Locals are very pleasant and accommodating and love it when you practice Spanish with them It is a very safe place to be, and there is a wide variety of excursions and nightlife to satisfy everyine's interest. It is a WONDERFUL place to relax and get away from the Canadian winter weather. Some friends have returned time and again for many, many years - in fact, if you do not book your stay a year in advance you are out of luck in some places. I too have been to Playa del Carmen many times over the last 25 years and it has changed dramatically from the charming, sleepy little town it once was.
