Monsaraz is a fairy-tale place with a breath-taking view over Europe´s largest dam the Alqueva, the plains and Spain. Unique since it is populated by 150 real locals, no golf-playing vacationers (although golf-courses are projected in the neighbourhood). The little town, from around 1200 until 1850 the centre of this part of Alentejo, is culturally protected which means restoration of buildings or ruins is permitted only in the strict old Alentejo style. All tv antennas and modern lamp post have been taken away and replaced by cable tv in the ground and old-fashion lanterns on the walls.
2 small hotels and a number of B&Bs inside and outside of the town, restaurants, cafés and small shops with local handicraft and wine. In and around Reguengos de Monsaraz there are at least 6 high class wine producers.
Monsaraz, until 20 years ago almost unknown even in Portugal, now in every guide-book, has been visited among others by Portugal´s last two Presidents, Sweden´s King and Queen.
