We loved the old town in Las Palmas. It was stacked full with great little restaurants and bars. From our hotel near San Telmo park we could easily walk through the shopping area to the old town and back along the seaside. Loved El Museo Canario and the Casa Colon (columbus house) was interesting as well. When we wanted we took the car or the bus to Las Canteras beach. For all other sightseeing we used the car. Maspalomas or Playa del Ingles has a better location if you want the beach, but if you want some authenticity and less foreign tourists the old town of Las Palmas is where you want to be. When we did want to go to the beach, we just took the 30 minute drive to Faro de Maspalomas. It's just as easy and it's a much beach and enviroment than Las Canteras. But for the food, culture and the nightlife, definitely Las Palmas.
