Goreme combines a quaint, traditional village with all the amenities and conveniences of a tourist hub..except the plethora of noisy bars found in Istanbul and the coastal resort towns, which is more conducive to the early morning balloon tours (a must!) and long days hiking around the stunning valleys and the Goreme Open Air Museum. Lots of the ubiquitous Turkish cafes offering tasty local dishes and a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend Cafe Roma under the Roma Kalesi (the rock-cut roman-era tomb right at the heart of town) for it's great ambiance...especially when the young owners play traditional Turkish music! Over 90 hotels and pensions to choose from, and I have stayed in a few over the years. Star Cave Hotel and Pension is an excellent choice. Very affordable rates; friendly, knowledgeable staff that have been in the business for years and can help arrange all sorts of tours and activities; cozy cave rooms; excellent view of the town and Goreme valley and plentiful breakfasts!
