Situated in a remote corner of Europe - close to the Russian border - this is a wilderness hotel indeed. Nellim is a small Finnish village, not too far from Ivalo and the international airport, in the middle of the taiga. It is an ideal starting point for wilderness trips in summer and winter.
I stayed here with a small group in the heart of the Lapland winter. In winter the hotel rents out cross country skis or snow shoes. They also organize husky tours and snow mobile safaris. There is a large group of huskies onsite.
The hotel itself has very friendly and knowledgable staff that speaks good English and some German. Amenities are pretty basic, but good. Rooms are simple and not super large, but more than good enough for a wilderness vacation. There is a small but nice restaurant with excellent personal service. The lobby is small but cosy, with a few seats around a fireplace and TV set.
In the immediate area around the hotel there is excellent (ice) fishing and plenty of nature.
